Goldenberg Concert Series IX : Himig ng Pasko
The Office of the Social Secretary is proud to present the ninth installment from the Goldenberg Concert Series featuring the one and only, Ms. Anya Lagman.
Anya Lagman is a Los Angeles, California-based Filipina composer, producer and songwriter whose works have been performed by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra across the United States and the Philippines. She grew up in a musical household surrounded by gifted vocalists and musicians and was raised in a Western community that greatly shaped her passion for composing and producing.
Originally from Manila, Philippines, Lagman began playing the piano at the age of four and started composing by the time she was fourteen, inspired by Hans Zimmer's score for Christopher Nolan’s Inception. She honed her craft at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Composition. She studied under composers such as Donald Crockett, Andrew Norman, Ted Hearne, Nina Young and Veronika Krausas.
She contributed additional music for the Emmy Award-winning Scavengers Reign, a Max Original animated series created and executive produced by Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner. In October 2024, Lagman made history as the first Filipina composer to create a theme song for Estée Lauder Philippines' Breast Cancer Campaign and Pink Charity Ball, conducting the piece alongside the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. The campaign raised 9.65 million pesos for breast cancer screening initiatives in Manila.
In July 2023, Lagman was selected as the first composer for the Malacañang Heritage Mansion, an initiative by the Philippines' Social Secretary’s Office. Her compositions were showcased in Pagsibol, the inaugural musical and cultural show held at the Goldenberg Mansion.
Her notable works and collaborations include Balikbayan, premiered in both the United States and the Philippines by the Philippine Madrigal Singers, one of the country’s leading choirs, and Stare at the Sun, performed by the Chicago-based professional chamber choir. She was also commissioned by Museo Pambata, the Philippines' first and only children’s museum, to create a new arrangement of their theme song for its 30th anniversary and grand re-opening. She was also one of three scholars selected by the Alliance for Women Film Composers to participate in the 2024 Joy Music House Workshop in Los Angeles. Anya is deeply passionate about integrating traditional Filipino instruments into her music, which has become a signature of her craft.
The concert took place on the 6th of December 2024, at the majestic Goldenberg Mansion. The show had two sets with a special audience from various educational institutions at 2pm and 5pm.
The 5pm show was flocked by students from Bago Bantay Elementary School and San Jose High School.
The students were left inspired by the young and vibrant multi-talented composer, whose long list of achievements exceed her youth. It was only topped by her stellar performance at the enchanting Goldenberg Mansion.
