The Office of the Social Secretary is proud to present the eight installment from the Goldenberg Concert Series featuring the one and only, Dr. Raul M. Sunico.
Raul M. Sunico obtained his degrees in Music, Mathematics and Statistics from the University of the Philippines. He went on to finish his Master of Music and Ph.D degrees from the Juilliard School in New York and the New York University, respectively, as a scholar of the Young Artists Foundation of the Philippines and as a recipient of the Amon Foundation grant.
He was also later conferred a Doctor of Humanities degree [ honoris causa ] by the Far Eastern University. He has performed in more than 30 countries covering North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. He holds the distinction of performing the four piano concertos of Sergei Rachmaninoff in a single evening on two occasions in 2004 and 2019, as well as the three piano concertos of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 2015.
An international piano competition awardee in Italy, winning the silver medal in Viotti and finalist diploma in Busoni and in the United States bagging the Henry Cowell Prize at the University of Maryland, Dr. Sunico is a recording artist with more than 50 CDs of classical, original Philippine composition, pop and collaborative music. He is also an author of elementary and high school music textbooks used by the Department of Education.
He has been a jury member of the Bergen Piano Concerto Competition, USA, the Isidor Bajic International Piano Competition in Serbia, the Piyabhand Sanitwongse Competition in Thailand—and is a part of most piano competitions in Manila.
He has also served as the President of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and as a Dean of the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music from 2002-2016. He is presently the Dean of the St. Paul College of Music and the Performing Arts in Manila and Chair of its Doctoral of Musical Arts Program. Outside his professional positions, Dr. Sunico has been active in various arts and music foundations including the Klassikal Musik Foundation, Performing Arts and Recreational Center Foundation, Philippine Ballet Theater, Philippine Italian Association, Friends for Cultural Concerns of the Philippines, Johann Strauss Society of the Philippines, Benita and Catalino Yap Foundation, Treble Choir Association of the Philippines, National Music Competition for Young Artists and the Sunico Foundation for Arts and Technology.
The concert took place on the 8th of November 2024, at the historical Goldenberg Mansion. The show had two sets with a special audience from various educational institutions at 2pm and 5pm.
The 2pm show welcomed musically inclined students from General Emilio Aguinaldo Integrated School, Esteban Abada High School, Mariano Marcos Memorial High School, and Ramon Magsaysay High School.
The 5pm show was flocked by students from Victorino Mapa High School and Claro M. Recto High School
The students were left inspired and in awe by the legendary pianist whose long list of accolades that go beyond the world of music, were topped by his stellar performance at the enchanting Goldenberg Mansion.
